Recently my life changed a lot
July 31, 2026
Woof! Bailey here (with a little typing help from the humans). I want to tell you about the strangest, scariest few weeks of my life โ and how I came out the other side still wagging.
June 4th โ something wasn't right
It began with my right eye. Just a small ache at first. But I'm a tough little dog, so I didn't make a fuss โ I didn't want to worry Mommy and Daddy. My eye watered a bit, and I told myself, I've felt this before, it's nothing.
By the time Daddy came home from sport that evening, I felt much worse. My eye had started to swell, and for once I didn't even want to sit beside my humans at dinner. I curled up in my cosy basket instead. That's when they knew something was really wrong, and they called the vet. We went first thing the next morning.
June 5th โ the first visit
The vet could see straight away that I had an eye infection, and it was spreading fast. She gave me some medication and booked me in with a special eye doctor for a follow-up the next week.
June 7th โ off to the emergency room
The medication just wasn't working. Daddy phoned the animal hospital's emergency line and we rushed over. The emergency doctor took one look and agreed my eye had gotten worse. I went home with pain relief and some extra medicine.
June 9th โ hard news
At the eye doctor, the news wasn't good: she warned that I might lose my eye. Mommy and Daddy talked through all my options with her. Because of my age, we decided not to jump straight to surgery, but to give my eye a little more time. At least it hadn't gotten any worse since Sunday.
June 15th โ the scariest night
My eye was still swollen โ I had something called a corneal edema โ and I was wearing a cone around my neck so I couldn't scratch at it. Then the edema burst. It was the most painful thing I have ever felt. I ran and ran, I shook, and I was so frightened. Mommy and Daddy called the eye doctor right away, and we arranged to go back for a check-up.
June 16th โ surgery
This time I needed surgery, even with the extra risks that come with my age. The plan was to close my third eyelid. But once the eye doctor began, it became clear that my eye simply could not be saved โ so the decision was made to remove it. It wasn't an easy choice, but Mommy, Daddy and I were all agreed: whatever is best for me is what matters most.
Life with one eye
So now I get by with just one eye. It took some getting used to โ I still bump into things every now and then, and I'm not always great at judging distances when I jump. But honestly? I feel so much better, and I'm a happy girl again. All the extra cuddles and care over these past weeks certainly helped.
I'll admit I was a little worried about what the other dogs โ and their humans โ might think of me now. But every single reaction has been kind.
Yes, I'm missing an eye. But I'm still me: the proudest, cutest doggo in the whole neighborhood. ๐พ
Thank you!
From all three of us โ me, Mommy and Daddy โ a big thank you to my eye doctor for the wonderful care she gave me.
Stay tuned โ more adventures (and snacks) coming soon. ๐พ
